Eeyore’s 51st Birthday Celebration
April 22, 2014
Eeyore’s 51st birthday celebration is fast approaching! The annual celebration is taking place at Pease Park in Austin on April 26th. Come join in the fun that starts at 11 am and goes until dusk. The event is a fundraiser that benefits non-profits in the Austin area.
Eeyore’s birthday celebration started in 1963, as a spring party and picnic for students in the English Department at the University of Texas at Austin. The celebration is named after the fictional character Eeyore, the chronically depressed donkey from the famed Winnie the Pooh books, who thought that all of his friends had forgotten his birthday, when they actually planned a surprise party for him. The first celebrations featured a trashcan of lemonade, beer, a maypole, and a flower-draped donkey. It was a tradition for UT students for many years that has transitioned into a celebration of Austin’s hippie/counter culture and is now attended by all who want to help keep Austin weird.
There is still the traditional maypole for children, beer for adults, costumes, and a donkey for all to enjoy and wish happy birthday! Everyone is encouraged to come in costume and enter in the contest for a chance to win different prizes. There are drum circles that pop up during the day and musicians are invited to bring their non-amplified instruments to play. There will also be live bands throughout the day for everyone’s entertainment. The whole family is invited to come and enjoy the celebration that features many activities from sack races to face painting to acrobats – keeping everyone entertained.
Central Insurance Agency, located in Austin, Texas, invites you to join in the fun at Eeyore’s birthday celebration. They also urge you to contact them for all your auto, home, or business insurance needs!
